Warm Embrace October Comfort Drive

Mitakuye  Oyas’ In
If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it….
1 Corinthians 12:26

October 18-November 14, 2005

For the next four weeks, we are asking for your help.  We can celebrate the season and our Native American brothers and sisters by partnering with those who helped us so long ago.  Upon visiting South Dakota , Chris and Dana Thompson and family have witnessed first-hand the needs of the Lakota people of South Dakota.  One major obstacle these people face is extreme cold. The fact that many homes do not have heat and residents burn the siding off of their own houses is a reality.  As we tuck our families into their warm beds, with warm pajamas, socks and plenty of blankets, and keep our thermostats warm, we must think about the hardships to be faced by the Lakota people this winter.   Let’s show them we care and attempt to make a difference.

Quality of Life in South Dakota on some of the reservations

•  The temperature this winter will get down to 40 below zero.
•  Up to 50% have no phone and up to 40% have no central heat
•  50% of the people live below the poverty line
•  80-90% of the residents are unemployed
•  29% of the people are homeless, many live 16 people to a four bedroom house

What is the Warm Embrace Comfort Drive?
